Sony BMG Music Entertainment Licenses Content to Mashboxx
I woke up this morning to read a press release from Mashboxx, which announced the finalization of its first licensing deal with a major recording company - Sony BMG Music Entertainment. CEO Andrew Lack is no doubt starting a new trend that the other majors will soon follow and the timing couldn't be better given Monday's Supreme court decision...It's been reported that Sony BMG has been working with a variety of companies to come up with a technology to let them develop a legalized file sharing network to take on Apple iTunes digital music store and now they've chosen one.
So what does all this mean? Well, in a nut shell, Sony/BMG has given permission (hopefully for ALL of it's content) for its music to be legally traded, swapped and purchased via searches performed on major existing file sharing networks (i.e., BearShare, Kazaa, etc.) The songs will be offered at $.99 each, offering music lovers free previews of the entire length - but with a limited number of plays...
Even though the Mashboxx application is still in the test phase - the deal is quite significant since it has one of the major players on board...Negotiations are currently underway with other major and independent record labels and will be announced upon completion.
According to Mashboxx CEO Wayne Rosso, " SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT has done the heretofore unthinkable: embrace file sharing. And in so doing has displayed great courage and foresight. We at Mashboxx are clearly overjoyed because this is a watershed moment in the evolution of the digital music marketplace. We hope it will be the harbinger of a brighter future for content owners, p2p technology and, of course, users."
