World Shapers
Who are the people shaping our world? According to Time magazine, musically it's the Dixie Chicks, Daddy Yankee and Rain. Those are the only music acts listed in the artists and entertainers category of the publication's "The Time 100" list of "men and women whose power, talent or moral example is transforming our world."
The reason the Chicks made the list, Time says, is due to their political attitude. "One country and one form of music aren't enough to contain them or stifle their passion," the mag says. "They'll sing but they won't shut up. That seems downright American."
For Yankee and Rain, however, the reasons are monetary.
Yankee is lauded for the lucrative nature of his reggaeton career: "Expect a lot more registers to be ringing," Time predicts. Meanwhile, the desire of South Korean entertainer Rain to conquer a U.S. audience -- and it's dough -- is notable. "Pop culture no longer moves simply in a single direction," says Time. "It's a global swirl, no more constrained by borders than the weather."
Bono, Wynton Marsalis and Paul Simon also made the list, but under the "Heroes & Pioneers" heading, while Sean Combs (remember when we called him "Puffy"?) is considered among "Builders & Titans."
