Idol Chatter: The '60s Ain't So Swingin'
It was British invasion night on "American Idol," and although the songs didn't quite create the same impact as they did in the '60s, there was some Beatles-worthy hysteria from an 8-year old girl frantically sobbing in the audience (we look for her to appear on "Jimmy Kimmel" sometime in the coming week).
Apparently, the songs from this era were too far out of the AI gang's comfort zone, and the contestants looked like a herd of deer caught in headlights as they rehearsed in front of this week's singing coaches, Peter Noone and Lulu.
The performances kicked off with Haley, who, misguidedly clad in a backless top and frighteningly short shorts, finally conceded to her glaring lack of singing ability and decided it's safest to bank on sex appeal, which, unfortunately, will probably bring her back next week.
And while we're wading in the completely void-of-talent pool, Sanjaya nearly made the fanatical 8-year old faint. Not to mention his sister and her equally big-busted friends were all sporting sparkly Sanjaya tops. Seriously, this guy hasn't even hit puberty yet, and already he's got more tail lined up than any frat boy could ever dream of.
Chris Richardson offered up a surprisingly decent acoustic performance of Gerry and the Pacemakers' "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying." Blake wasn't half-bad either, on the Zombies' "Time of the Season," although the beat boxing is getting old, plus he's bordering a little too close to Adam Levine for our liking.
Gina made a mess out of "Paint It Black," and we think its time her and her pleather get sent packing. Heavy-hitters LaKisha and Stephanie were both just so-so, and once again Melinda proved she truly is too good for this competition.
In other "Idol" news, J,I.'s Season 5 favorite, Elliott Yamin, released his debut today. And his teeth are fixed. Hooray!
