SXSW Day 4: Iggy In All His Glory

Stooges_the_01l After reminiscing for an oft-hilarious panel discussion the day before, the Stooges treated Austin to a little raw South by Southwest power on Saturday night, closing the festival with 50 minutes of proto-punk that tapped both the group's storied past and the present of "The Weirdness," its first new album in 34 years. A typically shirtless Iggy Pop and company charged on stage with "Loose" and kept the classics coming -- "I Wanna Be Your Dog," "TV Eye," "1970" and "Fun House" -- before using "Skull Rings," a song the Stooges recorded for Pop's 2003 solo set "Skull Ring," to transition into the fresh material, including the single "My Idea of Fun."

As is his wont, Pop quickly smashed any barrier between the band and the packed crowd at the Esquire-sponsored showcase at Stubb's, which included comedian Dennis Miller and actress Kirsten Dunst. He was straddling across the security pit from the get-go and jumping into the crowd by the second song. And for the encore, "No Fun," Pop -- whose jeans sank dangerously at the lower edge of his rippled torso --  pulled a couple dozen fans onto the stage to mosh and dance while the other Stooges worked their way through the song. -- Gary Graff

Long Before Dave Vanian Became a Horn Section

Halloween sun in August.
Suppertime in Michigan.
Twenty miles from Ann Arbor--
Ypsilanti?

My sister Ann puked on the side of a--
Detroit?--busy street; too much
Partying.

Like Joan Baez, I
Plugged my ears, turned away--
Saw a drug store.

Too cold in the tent.
The warm station wagon
At 6AM,
Grander than the Grand Canyon--

Warmer in the afternoon. Iggy--
Once a drumming Iguana--
Howled, swan dived into the Grand Canyon,
At least a couple years before MTV.

Ron Asheton's TV Eye intro
On a shaded ledge. Down on the
Sun-dirt,
The Mighty Pop rose, sang
