Idol Worship: Clay Aiken Dropped?
Leave it to a homepage overhaul to alert the gossip world that Clay Aiken has been dropped. But that's apparently exactly what happened when RCA refreshed its roster on the label's official web site and the American Idol season two runner-up was nowhere to be found. A source tells Billboard Aiken was indeed dropped, but it happened a couple of months ago. An RCA representative was not immediately available for comment.
Aiken now joins a slew of second place finishers — Katharine McPhee, Diana DeGarmo, Justin Guarini, Blake Lewis and Bo Bice, among them — let go from their major label deals post-Idol. (McPhee, however, recently signed with Universal's Verve label.) Last season's David Archuleta, who's on Sony's Jive Records, remains in good standing, with his debut already certified gold, but then again, Aiken's went double platinum. Of course, 2003 was a different time and not even Idol is recession-proof.
Will Aiken land elsewhere? We'll keep you updated on what we hear. -- Shirley Halperin

What is the big deal record labels "drop" artists ever day. If gone from RCA he also joins Maroon 5 and Heather Headley who have left the label in recent years. He released 4 albums and an EP. Sometimes change can be very good, not negative.

i agree, it's a good thing for clay to get dropped. He'll resign with another label that might treat him better then RCA.

THANK GOD!! From the very beginning, RCA had no idea what to do with Clay. First they tried to market him as a teen idol which he let them know pretty quickly was NOT who he was or ever aspired to be. Then they took a triple Platinum-selling album with a big radio hit, a Platinum single & another Gold single off it & instead of letting him make another pop CD, they force him to do a Christmas album, followed by a covers CD. WTF?! 5 yrs we had to wait for another pop album & by then the economy had tanked & RCA decides to put no money into promoting it. I just wonder if they'll ever admit their incompetence in mismanaging such a unique talent with a proven, devoted fanbase. Wring everything out of him till he's dry in the general public's eyes & why bother supporting any songs to radio or making videos. IDIOTS! Clay has got to be doing the same happy dance as his fans are today!

Here's another Clay Fan who will do a happy dance if it's true that Clay has left RCA! I think Billboard ought to at least check their facts before they announce Clay got dropped, maybe Clay decided to leave RCA of his own choice, it HAS been 5 years and contracts DO get fulfilled. Please don't compare Clay to any other runner up from AI, Clay got a WINNER'S conract, and was treated as the WINNER of season 2 because he DID win that season. Everybody knows that.Name me one other runner up or winner for that matter who has released as many CDs, EPs and Singles and toured 8 times SOLO as Clay has.I'll give you the answer- NONE. Clay will be just fine and what ever new label he has choosen will be very lucky to get him.

I always liked your posts, but I am disappointed that you haven't updated your story with he real facts. Clay was NOT dropped. The official word was announced late yesterday and your sensational headline is misleading.
Clay fulfilled his contract with RCA and decided to move on.
I look forward to a great future for Clay. With a team that wants him to succeed and supports him, he will be in a better place than before.
