Interesting, I didn’t know that… thought that it just downloaded it bit by bit which allows users to start listening before it’s fully downloaded… but I could well be wrong (has happened many times before :o)
Step-forward or miss-step is a good question though. Returning to my original argument there’s an enormous difference between capturing the audio of someone delivering a lecture in a theatre to an audience and someone recording it with the sole purpose of distributing online (and then dealing with comments / questions in a comments thread like this one for example)… unfortunately, however, investment usually equals commitment and you can almost measure, I reckon, the barriers to good practice by the amount of money initially invested (as you say, to ‘research’, ‘validate’ and operate within an R&D cycle is not to spend hundreds of thousands on a system and then make it work… more flexible solutions, ones that allow for iterative & responsive design, ones, dare I say that incorporate subversion are what you need!)
So… while I admit that they come in handy in the same way Maccas does when you’re starving and there’s no food available, to extend the metaphor I don’t think Maccas is doing much for the environment or culinary development, granted it fits some people but that doesn’t mean it’s ‘progress’ (OK, am aware I’m stretching the metaphor just a tad there :o)
So while we’re taking a step forward of sorts, I kinda feel that the step is down the wrong path and will eventually have to be retraced in order for us to get something of value.
Not that I’m against going down the wrong path, that’s a very valuable thing, but there are ways and means (which don’t involve the paid & $s!) to go there…
Wouldn’t know if it was more my field than yours… I don’t know your field!!!
