Bumbershoot 2006: Lidell's Got Soul

20060406jamie_lidell_1After hearing Blondie from a perplexingly slow-moving "Artists, Artist Guests, Press," line, locating a well-hidden press office and being denied Wi-Fi access, the first pleasure of Bumbershoot 2006 arrived in the form of Jamie Lidell's excellent set of soul-inflected experimentation. Lidell delivered a characteristically dynamic show that was easily viewed from the sanctuary of the adjacent beer garden. The beating sun and initial sound issues may have persuaded Lidell to remove his trench coat and scarf (!?) before the second song, but neither botched his delivery, which included a 10-minute, live sample-based number that built slowly, sample-upon-sample, into an infectious crescendo. The remainder of the set easily erased the day’s earlier hassles.

Jaded Insider contributor Grant Brissey will be blogging from Bumbershoot all weekend.
