CMJ Warm-Up: Hot, Hot, Hot
CMJ hasn't even offically started yet, but J.I. is already partying hard. Last night brought two "pre-festival" events -- a nifty discussion with the founder of the Pandora online radio service and a sauna-like party with adorable bands.
The Pandora event featured a fully stocked open bar (whee!) plus a lot of talk about the nuts and bolts of running an online radio service. We'll spare you all the details, but Pandora seems to be worth checking out if you want a new online radio outlet.
After horking down a veggie burger at a Meatpacking District diner and having a bizarre discussion about the mechanics of the demise of Big Moe (cocaine and COUGH SYRUP? Really?), we booked uptown and were thrust into the inferno that was Rebel. After throwing down $13 for a beer and diet soda (the open bar had long since run dry), we caught a set by We Are Scientists. They are, and we mean this in the nicest possible way, the Backstreet Boys of the indie world. The lead singer is the hot one. The bassist is the sarcastic one. The keyboardist is the goofy one. The drummer... plays drums. The played a few songs from their forthcoming record, which were just as poppy and catchy as the songs from their last record.
On the verge of heat exhaustion, J.I. decided to call it a night, heading to Penn Station to pay homage to the last vestigaes of old New York before hopping on the train. Today and tonight promise to be just as fun, though hopefully cooler. -- Cortney Harding
