Oops, She Didn't Do It Again

EaglestopbritneyspearsBy now you have been thoroughly inundated by news that the Eagles, whose last studio album came out before Britney Spears was even born, have snatched number 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart from the embattled pop tabloidista because Billboard has decided to change the chart rules and count Eagles sales from Wal-Mart. Britney's "Blackout" is now her first album not to land at No. 1 thanks to the Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden." Some people are really really mad that the middle-aged rockers trumped the world's most talked about music celeb (she's easily topped the Billboard Buzz 100 blog chart for weeks). Others are just interested in the change to the way the charts are put together. What do you think?

J.I. popped a little poll on Billboard.com here, or you can tell us what you think of the Eagles vs. Britney chart battle in comments right here.

i think billboard did this shit on purpose. she deserves to be # 1 if the eagles wanted that they should have released to more than walmart. i think its unfair and she deserves to have a fifth #1 album cuz its hot. u made a mistake changing the rules now that is stupid as hell.

I think that it is so shady of billboard to all of a sudden change something 24 hours before the results come out! To me it shows how ignorant people are and want someone to fail! i no longer will be visiting this site nor will I support the magazine.... I canceled my prescription!

Shame on you people for announcing your revised policy hours right before Britney Spears album Blackout was about to debut at number 1 on the billboard 200. This is a disrecpect to her record label and mostly to your public. You should had announced this new policy with the right ammount of time and you own an apology to all those affected by it. This just shows the lack of credibily that your charts have nowadays…just take a look at the billboard 100 and anyone with good taste on music would say WTH is wrong with that chart and you people.

i think its ridiculous how the rules were changed only when britney was to top the charts again..it isnt fair for one group to chart with sales through one retailer. it should be changed and britney should be recognized for what her profession is and be on top as usual

Posted by: gustavo | Nov 7, 2007 6:10:45 PM

SO WRONG OF YOU GUYS BRITNEY DESERVED NUMBER ONE EAGLES ARE OLD AND OUTDATED. BRITNEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN NUMBER ONE F U BILLBOARD.

Posted by: erricka | Nov 7, 2007 6:15:45 PM

Billboard should have waited until more artists made exclusive deals with individual retailers to change the chart methodology...it's just soo odd how billboard would just change things over night, the day before the results of her album came out. If a change was going to be made, it def should've been made much much earlier! shady shady..

Posted by: Ermek | Nov 7, 2007 6:23:27 PM

RU Crazy ??? or what?? ... THe eagles who??? .... please! Right Now Blackout is number one in eleven contries!...What is wrong with you guys????.... and if The eagles decided to make a deal with Wall Mart... too bad 4 them!! Britney deserves number one!! Just like the previous 4 times! pd. I don't have Blackout yet and in some ways i don't care who's number one, but i think you're makin' a mistake with this supossed "new rules"

Posted by: Andres | Nov 7, 2007 6:26:14 PM

I'm disgusted with billboard for this rule change. its only because its britney spears...i don't like her and wouldn't buy her cd but its unfair...u have made fools of your self and your system...many have lost respect for the "charts" u need to give her the number one spot because that is what is fair, had it been any other artist this rule would have waited but you can't stand the fact that britney is number one...she is a huge who should be treated like one and not a zoo animal who u do with what u wish...give her the number one stop...NEVER BUYING ANTHOR CD....EVERYONE DOWNLOAD FUCK THIS STUPID INDUSTARY THEY ARE BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: amy | Nov 7, 2007 6:30:56 PM

Billboard, you disgust me. What you guys did was TOTALLY PATHETIC. ugh..i don't even know what to say anymore. Britney is still #1 to me.

Posted by: Marivic | Nov 7, 2007 6:31:34 PM

Come on people, lighten up. Everything changes, including Billboard. Everyone knew The Eagles were going to have a mega hit, and if it hadn't been Britany they knocked off, it would have been someone else. If you think it makes sense to ignore WalMart sales, you better think again.

Posted by: shelley | Nov 7, 2007 6:32:24 PM

billboard? wtf....? billboardless..as in senseless.....bloody fucking billboard!

Posted by: cris scott | Nov 7, 2007 6:32:42 PM

Somehow, some way, the Eagles were successfully able to almost triple Britney's sales while their album was only available on their website and at Wal*Mart/Sam's Club. Holy fuck. That doesn't make any sense. I have to believe Wal*Mart skewed those numbers.

Either way, apparently albums that were not widely available were not eligible for Billboard charting, which I don't really feel makes sense other than the simple fact that normally, you would expect an album only available on their website and perhaps at some jacked up wholesaler like Sam Walton's chains, would never be able to tip the scales. I mean HOW THE FUCK did they sell over 700,000 albums just through Wal*Mart? And WHY?!? Why the fuck would anyone make an exclusive record deal with a fucking corporate evil like Wal*Mart? Especially if it was your triumphant return and first studio album in almost 30 years? I know the baby boomers are a large demographic, and a majority of them probably shop at Wal*Mart, but still, imagine how much larger the exposure would have been if it was sitting at like Giant Eagle in the check out line, and at Macy's and all the other places that old women who most likely love the Eagles shop. I don't really understand the old policy anyway, other than the fact that if the album is exclusive to a specific chain, they could probably skew the numbers however they want, like by saying the album sold 711,000 copies when it really sold 7,110 copies. I don't know how easy it would be to cheat that, but as long as the numbers are legitimate I don't see a reason why that policy is anything but sensible, even if the idea of an exclusive deal is not.

i'm disgusted with you, billboard

Posted by: Eric | Nov 7, 2007 6:35:03 PM

The eagles are so old they need to give up on music already. Britney deserves number one she came onto the music sence as number one & thats where she should stay.

I HATE YOU BILLBOARD!!!! BRITNEY SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!!!!!!! THE EAGLES WERE NOT ELGIBLE AND HOURS BEFORE YOU CHANGE IT???????????? DID U KNOW WAT A MESS YOU WERE GETTING INTO??????????????

Posted by: R | Nov 7, 2007 6:41:19 PM

Very disgusting move by Billboard to change the rules 24 hours before they announce the chart. The albums were released under the old rules and thus the old rules should apply to them. This whole situation is very, very shady and I have lost a lot of respect for Billboard over this.
