TVOTR: They Like [email protected]*!ing, They Hate Danger

Images1 Towards the end of TV On The Radio’s mindblowing show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple, J.I. ran in to a friend who was covering the concert for another publication. “No one is dancing,” he complained. “These dudes are going to go to Wilkes-Barre and people are going to be flying off the rafters.” While we saw one dreadlocked fellow who looked like he got lost on the way to Phish reunion getting down, most of the crowd simply stood still and sweated in the air-conditioning-deficient Brooklyn Masonic Temple.

The Dirtbombs opened the show, and were almost felled by problems with the sound, or lack thereof – the Masonic Temple, beautiful as it may be, is not a traditional venue and lacks the accompanying sound system. Still, the band soldiered forth, playing their dirty, soulful garage punk for a fairly attentive crowd.

TV On the Radio (TVOTR from here on out, because we don’t feel like typing it out), took the stage and captured the crowd with “Halfway Home,” the opening track from their new record, “Dear Science.” They mixed in some older tracks (“Wrong Way,” “Wolf Like Me,” and “Young Liars”) with tracks from the new record, and all were soaring and stayed just on the right side of self-indulgent. Dave Sitek, the band’s guitarist and producer, stayed largely out of the way for most of the set, letting frontmen Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe trade songs. The band was also accompanied by a number of horn players throughout the course of the evening.

During “Dreams,” the first song J.I. ever heard by TVOTR, we closed our eyes and let the music flow over us, never having felt so soothed by hearing someone tell us all our dreams were over. We split before the encore but managed to hear the show as we walked down a beautiful Fort Greene block, the smell of fall hanging faint in the air.
