Dispatch @ Madison Square Garden, New York – 7/13/2007
Last Friday, I caught Dispatch’s first of three sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. I had never been to The Garden before (don’t hate, I’m not into sports and I’ve only seen a show at the MSG Theater) and when I walked onto the floor, I was in awe of the space. It was HUGE and the security guards that led me and my friend Laura to our seats laughed at me when I said this was my first time there. We had awesome seats, fourth row on the aisle. We arrived pretty early and it was pretty empty. I turned to Laura and asked her (this was before I knew the shows were sold out) “Do you think this whole place will be packed when the show starts?” Sure enough, the place was filled with screaming fans of all ages.
The show was great. The band originally planned on playing one show with all proceeds from ticket sales going to help Zimbabwe. Tickets sold out so quickly, they added a second and eventually a third show.
The show started with the African Children’s Choir, they came out on-stage and performed with the band.
After a few songs, the lights went down and they showed a
video of Elias. The band met Elias on a
trip to
Zimbabwe
and later wrote a song about him.
During some of the songs, they projected facts about the country on the monitors.
Halfway through the show, the band performed on the top of their tour van. The three guys, guitar, and the acoustic feel of this mini-set made The Garden feel much more intimate.
