G. Love & Special Sauce & Slightly Stoopid: Bank of America Pavilion, Boston 8.22.07

Boston. I arrived at the Bank of America Pavilion during Slightly Stoopid’s set, and it didn’t take me long to figure out that the “Summer Haze Tour” was appropriately named. When the band wasn’t encouraging the wild crowd to get high, they were bringing out their unique blend of reggae mixed with a little ska influences and a few touches of classic rock guitar. All the members of Slightly Stoopid were showing love in their customized Red Sox and Patriots jerseys.

I was surprised about the combination of artists on this tour, because G. Love & Special Sauce has quite a different sound than Ozomatli (whose set I missed) and Slightly Stoopid. Anyways, G. Love did a great job of showcasing his signature funky, bluesy rap for the rest of the night. If you’ve never heard his music before, you probably can’t imagine rapping over blues guitar, but it’s a really unique sound that actually works perfectly for him.

He congratulated the Boston crowd on the Celtics’ acquiring Kevin Garnett in introducing “Shooting Hoops.” I was especially excited to hear “Milk and Cereal” because of its super-intellectual lyrics:

“No Grape-Nuts for Grandma
Mom likes Special K
You can’t pinch an inch
They’re magically delicious
Keep your hands off my Lucky Charms
Pink hearts, yellow moons, blue diamonds, green clovers
A is for Apple, J is for Jack
You step on a crack, you’ll break your Mama’s back
Rice Krispies, Franken Berries…”

And you can just imagine the rest of this song. Although all of his lyrics notable, a couple other fun ones he played included “Holla!” and “Booty Call.” They added a great full-band jam in the middle of “Hot Cookin’” and the upright bassist showed everyone he can really rock out at the end of “This Ain’t Living.” G. Love and his Special Sauce were very energetic and charismatic on stage, and it was a really fun show.
