Macy Gray / The Brand New Heavies - 4th & B - San Diego - 8.23.2007

Macy Gray brought her tour to 4th & B in San Diego last night. She, along with her band rocked the hell out of 4th & B downtown San Diego last night. After a 75 minute set by the Brand New Heavies, Macy and her band took the stage.

Macy puts on a show, the drummer, guitar and bass players were all dressed in suits and ties, while both keyboard players and the percussionist were slightly more casual, it was the two back up singers and Macy herself that had the great costume changes. Macy changed at least 4 times while the backup singers went through one costume change. Macy started out in white, then purple, then red and finally black.

2007 began on a bad note for Macy. She was kicked offstage at a concert in Barbados for the use of profanity (which was part of the show). She wasn't aware that profanity was against the law in that country, and Macy gave a public apology that night to avoid arrest.
March brought around the release of Grays fourth studio album BIG. Two singles have been released from the album, "Finally Made Me Happy" and "Shoo Be Doo". While the album has had critical acclaim in the U.S., it has only had moderate success. The album peaked at 39 on Billboard 200.

The song choices were all over the board. From new songs from the BIG album, to older hits and even a cover of John Lennon's Woman is the Nigger of the World

After telling the audience that she hopes they are not offended by the words she sang a fantastic version of this song.

Woman is the nigger of the world
Yes she is...think about it
Woman is the nigger of the world
Think about it...do something about it

We make her paint her face and dance
If she won’t be slave, we say that she don’t love us
If she’s real, we say she’s trying to be a man
While putting her down we pretend that she is above us

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don’t belive me take a look to the one you’re with
Woman is the slaves of the slaves
Ah yeah...better screem about it

We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother then
We tell her home is the only place she would be
Then we complain that she’s too unworldly to be our friend

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don’t belive me take a look to the one you’re with
Woman is the slaves of the slaves
Yeah (think about it)

We insult her everyday on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she’s young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don’t belive me take a look to the one you’re with
Woman is the slaves of the slaves
Yes she is...if you belive me, you better screem about it.

We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance

The biggest production number of the night was "Oblivion", a high energy number that the crowd responded to with great enthusiasm.

All in all, Macy still has a great voice and puts on a great show. If you get a chance to see them this summer, go.

Now, on the the Brand New Heavies....

The Brand New Heavies have been around for a long time. Starting off in london, they mix the 70s part of soul and funk. They got the crowd moving and grooving and as a co-headliner, they rocked.

Nadra

I know you don't like the red lighting, but you made it look good using a tiny little camera phone! Great job.

Tash

You've got to be kidding me!!! You did not take those pictures with your phone. They look better than the ones I take with my Kodak Digital Camera!!

This sounds like an awesome performance and the song, Woman is the Nigger of the World . . . all I can say is WOW! What was the crowd's reaction to that???
